In front of wall installation in thermal insulation composite systems
With constantly rising energy costs, the trend towards highly insulated buildings continues uninterrupted. External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), which are attached to the outside of load-bearing walls, are increasingly being used in new builds and renovations.
This has a knock-on effect on the installation position of the window, which is moved outward into the thermal insulation. Moving it forward looks better and brings more light into the room.
The solar energy thus obtained creates solar thermal gains and improves the building’s energy balance. It also has a positive effect on the temperature profiles in the transition points between the wall system and the window.
Convincing advantages of an in front of wall installation
The benefits of in front of wall installation in buildings with external thermal insulation composite systems are clear and are greatly increasing the demand for suitable in front of wall installation systems and coordinated sealing products that optimise the thermal insulation provided by the window installation. The result is the increasing use of standard solutions.
We have developed a flexible in front of wall installation system with various system types that are tailored to the different building situations.

The system profiles can optionally be braced with aluminium angles for additional stabilisation, providing a sufficient margin for increased loading requirements for large elements.
CERTIFICATIONS & TESTS
DETERMINATION OF THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY AND COMPONENT TESTING TO MO-01/1
As well as simply transferring the element weight loads, the dynamic loads to which the window is also subject must be taken into account; these are dissipated safely into the supporting wall by the ISO-TOP WINFRAMER IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM.
ift Rosenheim test report no. 14-001757-PR01 “Proof of determination of the load-bearing capacity an adhesive bond” and IMA Dresden test report A100/17.4A both confirm breaking load values considerably in excess of 2 tonnes / metre. Even in the weakest of the masonry types tested (aerated concrete), loading weights in excess of 200 kg / m were demonstrated.
But what is the point of all these individual tests if no load tests are carried out under real conditions? This is why we commissioned ift Rosenheim to endurance test the components of our IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1”.
For the system test, a window element was installed using the system in a real in-front-of-wall installation situation and sealed in accordance with good engineering practice. In the durability test which ran for several weeks, as well as testing the resistance to driving rain and air tightness various continuous loading tests were conducted. These demonstrated the long-term behaviour of our in-front-of-wall installation system under realistic conditions. As well as an alternating wind pressure/suction test over several hundred cycles and 10,000 opening and closing cycles, the complete wall element was exposed to temperature change cycles lasting several weeks in order to simulate the loads that occur in use.
PASSIVE HOUSES REQUIRE HIGH-QUALITY COMPONENTS
Our IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEMS ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” and „TYPE 3” have been awarded the classification of “Certified Passive House Components” in the window connection category by the Passive House Institute (PHI).
Passive house constructions feature a very high level of energy saving compared to conventional new builds. To meet the Passive House standard, only especially energy-efficient components may be used. To achieve the “Certified Passive House Component” certificate, our practical in-front-of-wall installation systems were tested to various comfort criteria in the Phb passive house efficiency class. The coveted award confirms that the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEMS ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” and „TYPE 3” with their outstanding energy-saving properties are perfect for use in passive houses.
Passive house-certified products such as the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEMS ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” and „TYPE 3” have been tested to standardized criteria by the Passive House Institute, offer comparable characteristics and are of excellent quality with respect to energy savings. Designers and installers can therefore be sure that using our IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEMS will make a significant contribution to ensuring that the resulting passive energy house works perfectly.
This now provides designers with the certainty they need to be able to use both load-bearing and energy-efficient, Passive House-certified products in all types of building. This is supplemented by the option of demonstrating the fRsi temperature factor from DIN 4108-2 in the ift INSTALLATION TOOL at portal.iso-chemie.eu.
ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 3” PASSES RC2 BREAK-IN TEST
The IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 3” was extensively tested by Holzforschung Austria. It was tested to resistance class RC2 for its intrusion-resistant properties. The results confirm that the in front of wall installation system withstands opening attempts using all the tools prescribed for the test.
The testing was carried out as specified in the DIN EN 1627-1630 series of standards, made even more rigorous by the addition of further attempted attacks. It not only incorporated the mechanical opening attempt between window frame and casement as prescribed by the standards; attempts were also made to break in between the frame and supporting frame system using the tools prescribed for the test. There was also an attack on the connection between the in-front-of-wall installation system and the body of the wall.
The IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 3” also successfully withstood the static pressure test on the window fixing points, plus a total of seven pendulum impact tests using a 50 kg twin-tyre impactor.
ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” PASSES RC3 TEST
Our IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” underwent break-in testing at ift Rosenheim. It passed with flying colours. In the class RC3 mechanical break-in test, two attempts were made to create an opening that would allow passage between the frame and casement. Despite the extensive range of tools available to the tester in this high resistance to forced entry class, it was impossible to get through. Not even long screwdrivers and a “Swedish steel” combined with the use of multiple wedges were able to touch the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1”.
Passing the RC3 test demonstrates that there are no weak spots at all within the overall construction and that use of the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” is guaranteed to resist forced entry. Successful completion of the RC3 test also means that windows from resistance classes RC3 and RC2 can be installed in front of the wall. The test applies to the three ISO-TOP WINFRAMER SYSTEM ANGLE dimensions 80 / 80, 140 / 90 and 160 / 110.
ALL REQUIREMENTS OF THE TRAV RULES AND ETB DIRECTIVE FULFILLED
The sample proofs for the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEMS ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” and „TYPE 1” E30 were obtained at ift Rosenheim, where they underwent component testing using the “Impact resistance test for a fixing system between window and building structure”. The in front of wall installation system was successfully tested for the effects of pendulum impacts as defined in the technical rules TRAV 2003-01, category C. In the test report, ift Rosenheim confirmed in detail that adequate fixing of the window with IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 1” is guaranteed in the component test carried out.
For components with safety glass, the ETB directive requires a load-bearing capacity at every attachment point of at least 2.8 kN. To fulfil this specification even with large elements, two different attachment variants were tested by transferring the load to the load-bearing masonry. One test used the JUSTA® BA fixing anchors and the other was conducted with integrated aluminium angled profiles which are bolted in the rebate area of the ISO-TOP WINFRAMER SYSTEM ANGLE „TYPE 1” or „TYPE 1” E30 during normal installation or by inserting the ISO-TOP ALUMINIUM CONSOLE into the console slots of the ISO-TOP WINFRAMER „TYPE 3”.
The fixing systems which are designed to meet ETB requirements reliably absorb the loads applied during the test and transfer them into the foundation. The particular advantage of both fixing systems is that there are no limitations on the air tightness obtained when sealing with multi-functional joint sealing tapes.
PLANNING INSTALLATION AND STRESS ANALYSIS
Suitable systems described in detail in the bill of quantities
The designer is responsible for the use of in front of wall installation systems. Suitable systems should therefore be described in detail in the bill of quantities.
The IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER can be installed on all standard mineral-based, load-bearing and solid substrates. The maximum supported loads must not be exceeded. The in-front-of-wall installation system is bolted to the external wall using the ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE WF system adhesive. Bolts must be fitted within the minimum edge distances specified for the different substrates. The window sizes should be designed in exactly the same way as when planning installation in the load-bearing wall. It should be noted that there will be a 10 – 15 mm connection joint all round. With the breaking load test values demonstrated by ift Rosenheim, the system types from the IN FRONT OF WALL INSTALLATION SYSTEM ISO-TOP WINFRAMER are also designed for tilt&slide doors and larger elements.
LIVE LOAD OR DEAD LOAD
The test reports confirm that the ISO-TOP WINFRAMER SYSTEM ANGLE is able to support extremely heavy loads. For the tests, the test pieces were glued exclusively with ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE WF. In practice, the system is also bolted to fixing systems that are matched to the supporting surface. The actual live load or dead load must be individually determined. The tested breaking load values, i.e. the values at which the test piece actually failed, are the starting basis for the structural analysis. There are number of influencing factors that the structural engineer will need to take into account. In addition to the size and weight of the elements, these include the expected wind load and the installation height. Other factors to include in the calculation relate to ageing of the technical bond on the masonry substrate. Dead loads of 200 kg / m or more are realistic. The ISO-TOP WINFRAMER STATIK TOOL provides a preliminary structural analysis which can be used to create an individual calculation tailored specifically to the project and the stress analysis requirements.
PLANNING TOOLS AT THE ISO-PORTAL
CALCULATION OF THE FOUR LOAD CASES & PRELIMINARY STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
Our experts will help you to calculate and draw up reports for the stress analysis for fixing components in and in front of the supporting facade. We use the ISO-TOP WINFRAMER STATIK TOOL for this. We developed this software in conjunction with Prof. B. Eierle of Rosenheim College; it calculates the four load cases in the in front of wall installation and outputs an individual preliminary structural analysis for the planned project. A report customised for the specific construction project is created with the results. This makes it very simple for the structural engineer to check the individual preliminary structural analyses.
